Wow an entire year has flown by since our last post. This past year we have added to our family (a son in law and a puppy.) Our son in law (Justin Bone and family are wonderful people!! and our puppy....well lets just say shes a work in progress.....I forgot how much work a puppy can be. We have a new driver (Kent) Yikes! and we have been helping a little on the new convention grounds in Shelter Valley. I should say Kent has been helping out the most as he spent most of his summer and winter breaks there. David and Seth and I spent a couple of days out there this winter break. A lot of hard work and sweet fellowship. So another year begins. I hope it doesn't fly by as quickly as this last one did.

Wintertime in San Diego

The month of December brought ice skating and exciting things to the Petri household. Kent and Seth both love the outdoor skating rink near us and have been skating a few times this season. Layne and Justin called us one evening from San Luis Obispo the first week in December and announced that they were engaged!! So this next year will be a busy one planning for a June wedding. Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving

This year we had friends and family over for Thanksgiving. The Gibsons and the Najjaros joined our family. It was wonderful to eat and play games and visit. The day after Thanksgiving we hiked up by Julian and then went out to dinner at an Italian place in Coronado, our table was right on the water by a fireplace overlooking the city of San Diego. We live in a beautiful town and have wonderful friends. We have so much to be thankful for.

More Fall Activities

We kidnapped the Dad from work this past Saturday and went to Hike Stone Wall Peak. It was a beautiful Fall day and we enjoyed our hike. When we got to the top we were enjoying the view from atop the mountain and four minutes later a crew of firefighters came running up. They made the peak in 32 minutes. It took us about and hour and 32 minutes but we weren't running with packs like they were. We then went to breakfast at this little restaurant that overlooks the lake. A great Saturday!

Fall Activities

On Halloween Seth dressed up for his school carnival...three guesses on who he dressed up as. This fall we have had exceptionally warm days. Sunday David made us breakfast outside complete with pumpkin pancakes, hot coffee and flowers. Kent has been working on a project for school, he had to make a shield that represented himself and his parents. Three guesses what painting represents the "mom". Great job Kent on your artistic ability!

Autumn

The first days of autumn bring fall leaves, warm days and crisp cool nights. Summer baseball ended with the Petri's supporting their Padres even tho their season left alot to be desired. The boys had fun and the San Diego evening was beautiful. The boys and Otis hope that the Chargers will have a better season. We finished off summer with a trip to Scripps and visited an octopus at the tide pools. October brought us to Bakersfield to celebrate Layne's birthday. We love fall!

Summer Vacation

This year our family (missing one member :o( (Layne was working and going to summer school) drove to Wyoming and met up with the Vandermydens for a week filled with mountain biking horseback riding and river rafting and Cowboy dinners. Wyoming is beautiful country we biked more miles than I ever have in my life on mountain trails. It was a great summer trip.

First days of Summer

We started summer this year with a wedding (Tim and Leona Hinkle) and watching Seth play baseball. Seth really improved this year as it was his first year to play. Layne came home for a few weeks so we took a weekend and went to Huntington Beach for a family get away. We stayed at a beautiful hotel across from the beach. It was a great weekend get away.

Santee and Buttonwillow

Our convention season just ended. Filled with special days, we attended Santee I and then some of Santee II and went up to Buttonwillow for the first time for the weekend to visit our daughter. It was wonderful to see friends at Buttonwillow that we don't get to meet with at Santee. At Santee we had several of our young kids start out. It was a bumper crop with ten young kids just our field!

This past weekend our family and Lynda Carol and Brittney Hightower traveled up north to attend our daughter Layne's baptism. There were six young people who were baptised at Avila Beach. We attended Layne's Sunday meeting and then drove across to be in Sally and Gretchen's gospel meeting in Bakersfield.

Turning Ten is Fun

Seth turned ten on March 5 and so we went to Disneyland. Alexa Najjaro went with us and we all were kids again at the Park!! Happy Double Digits Seth.

January in San Diego

This January we had some unseasonal warm weather so we did what most San Diegans do when the weather is warm......head to the beach!! We visited with our cousins from Minnesota (Meyers and Ritchmeyers) who came out to catch some of the warm sunshine in January. Good times with guitar and piano and singing on Sunday eve. It was wonderful to catch up with relatives and enjoy fellowship.

Holidays at Home

This Holiday season we stayed close to home. On Christmas we had Leona Diaz and her boys over for some games and fun. Layne and Justin came from up north and Damon stopped in for games on Christmas eve. New Years we had breakfast for supper and invited friends to join the fun. David made his famous blueberry and chocolate chip pancakes and Clarks, Najjaros and Gibsons chipped in with food and games. We feel blessed to be surrounded by friends and family.

We've been "tagged"!

Okay ... so the way that I understand this is that because our blog has been tagged, one of us has to list seven unusual (or at least heretofore "unknown") things about the person providing the list. And while I was not present at the time of the casting of the lots, apparently Lorinda believes that the lot has fallen on me to pour out seven shades of my soul.

You asked for it. So here we go ......

1.) Of all the things in life that we can fear ... bears, snakes, heights, public speaking, the dentist, my mother-in-law, your clothing becoming transparent in public while your abs are relaxed, singing the fourth verse at full crescendo in meeting when we were only singing verses 1 - 3 ..... of all the things that we can fear, I fear GRASSHOPPERS more than any other thing.

2.) I will never be so old that I will not absolutely LOVE being smothered in the comforting all enveloping HUG of a grandmotherly hug. (Nothing washes away the pain of isolation like a maternal bosom). I love quick hugs more than firm handshakes, and I envy watching the Europeans greet each other. It's a virtual production when Europeans meet, there's animation in the voice inflections, the embracing, the lips on the cheeks, the stand-back-while-you-still-hold-the-huggee and look at them with fresh appreciation before hugging them quickly again. Ahh we American's are missing something.

3.) I get a "high" when I get to participate in public speaking. I LOVE it!

4.) When I am done using a public restroom and see someone's discarded paper towels on the floor by the trash can ... I grab a fresh paper towel and use it to pick up the discarded paper towels and I clean up all of the towels on the floor so that the room is tidier than when I entered. (NOTE: If someone else is using the restroom, I abandoned this habit and just make sure that my own paper towel is properly discarded)

5.) If I wasn't professing, I would have Christmas lights, a REAL tree and 30 days of Christmas music preceding Christmas in our home.

6.) I am anxious for the end of the world. If it's this good here, can you imagine how much better God has planned it for then? (There won't be any handshaking in heaven ... it will be ALL hugs!) (DON"T get me wrong ... I don't feel READY for the end of the world)

7.) I love "lonely" music. The kind that makes me feel like I walking in complete isolation in the middle of Iceland with no other human beings for thousands of miles. The kind that makes me feel that I'm an audience of one in Carnegie Hall, and the music passes subtly past my ears and settles gently into my heart and becomes keen emotion. It has been said that music can stir the soul, but it can never feed the soul ... and so I always keep that in mind, but I still look forward to the stirrings of my soul through forlorn music.

Thanksgiving

We spent Thanksgiving in Bakersfield with the Bone family. It was a special time spent with special friends. Bryan and Justin buried a turkey and a ham in an underground pit. The boys golfed some and then the girls joined in for football and a little bunt ball. ( A great game that Mark Simmons taught the boys) We ate so much food and took walks to see the sheep. A very peaceful and wonderful Thanksgiving.

Bakersfield Visit

Last weekend our family met Layne in Bakersfield for a visit to the Bone's home. It was a wonderful weekend spent with wonderful friends. The boys had great fun experiencing some of farm life and exploring. We had never been to the Buttonwillow grounds so it was nice to visit that part as well.

San Diego Special Meeting

We had a wonderful special meeting my Aunt and Uncle came down from Monterey and then Layne( and Justin) came down from San Luis Obisbo and surprised us! It was a busy weekend but we sure enjoyed our company. It was nice to have our whole family home for the weekend at least.

San Luis Obispo

Last weekend I traveled up to visit Layne in San Luis Obispo. It was a fun and relaxing weekend. Layne and her roommates have a cute apartment, it is warm and fun at the same time. I love Layne's roommates and all of the friends in SLO. There seems to be an open door policy and kids wander in and out of apartments within the complex. Justin came up for the weekend and toured around with us in SLO. He is a great guy and we had a great time walking downtown and hiking .

River Trip

River Trip

Every year our family heads up to Blythe California to visit our good friends the Hightower Family. We go to the River to camp and water ski for the day and cookout. Lots of fun is had by all and wonderful fellowship with wonderful friends.

Labor Day Bike Ride

On Labor Day Monday we decided to head to the bay and go bike riding. Mel and Diana Clark and our family met down by Mission Bay and rode a 13 mile trail and then set up a bon fire at Fiesta Island to watch the Sea World Fire works. Leona Diaz and her boys joined us for dinner over the fire. Fun was had by all.

August 25th, 2008 - As summer evenings go, this one was about perfect. The day had been hot and sticky but now that the sun had slipped into the Pacific Ocean for the night, the air was so comfortable that you didn't even think about adjusting clothing for "hot" or "cold". In his mystical magical way, Seth had once again come up with two free tickets to a ball game, and so Seth's dad (Lorinda's husband) was able to buy a couple of discount tickets to go with Seth's completely discounted tickets ... and Seth, Kent, DJ Najarro and Seth (and Kent's) mostly unwilling father, headed off to Petco Park in downtown San Diego to watch the Padres who had currently lost five games in a row, play the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks.

Kent and DJ set in one area of the park, and Seth and Seth's Dad (and Kent's dad too) set in another (much closer to the field) part of the park to watch a good old-fashioned American past-time called "baseball". The game was largely uneventful, and for some reason Seth's dad (and Kent's dad) felt compelled to motivate the Padre players with loud bursts of baseball jargon screamed directly down at the players as they manned their positions. Things like "Play with passion, you knucklehead!" "He's digging in ... dust him off!" "What a pathetic at-bat that was, whose team are you on, anyways?" And so forth. Occasionally, Seth's dad (and Layne's dad too) would glance sideways at Seth after a particular boisterous session of player motivation, and Seth would be looking up at his dad with much the same look that one might have if they came upon a two-headed cow standing on their dining room table at breakfast.

At one point, Seth and his Dad (Lorinda's husband) ran to the concession stand, and for the mere price of $7.55 were able to buy one bottle of Dasani bottled water and a soft-serve ice cream cone piled high with soft creamy chocolate ice cream. Together they sat in their seats racing the consumption of the delicious ice cream against the forces of the warm summer air ... and as natural events go, both Seth and his dad felt that this was probably as perfect a night as would ever be made available to the two of them in one setting.

At 9:00, the score was still tied at 2, and no amount of player motivation was seeming to prove worthy of an effort that would break the knotted score, and Seth's dad (and of course Kent's dad too) was itching to call it a night and head for home. Seth's dad gently implored Seth with the desire to pack it in and head for the car because it was a school night, and we did still have five blocks to hike to get back to the car. Seth wanted no part of it. He wanted to stay until the bitter end, even if the game went into extra innings. He pleaded with his words, and the pleading in his expression made his pleas a full-fledged pleading in stereo that Seth's dad (and of course, Layne's dad as well) could not overcome. At 9:15, with the bottom of the 9th in full swing, and the game surely appearing to head towards extra innings, Seth's dad tried again to persuade Seth that he could hear the final result of the game on the radio if they left right away... and again the argument was settled with the look and tone of a Labrador Retriever waiting to be let in on a snowy December night.

There were two outs, and a man on first. Jody Gerut stood batting left-handed at the plate. The first pitch had barely crossed the plate when Seth's dad got ready to stand and force Seth's hand and carry him from the ballpark. The second pitch was on its way to home plate, just a blur of off-white against the summer night air, when something magical happened that made every penny and every effort of the nights experience disappear. Jody swung quickly in a lightning arc of motion and the ball exploded into the summer air and flew deep into Petco park soaring over the right fielder, the right field wall, and the first section of fans who turned in amazement to watch it's landing. Seth's dad, now standing, turned and looked at Seth who had his O shaped mouth covered with his two little hands folded one on top of the other, and his eyes were as big as saucers and so full of joy that all Seth's dad could do was hug his son tightly to him and realize more strongly than ever, that it's just one little moment here and there that can make all the difference in your day. After all of Seth's dad's ranting and raving at the lackadaisical plays of the evening, Seth's dad realized that for a nine year old boy, it only takes one moment to make it a memory of a lifetime. Thanks Jody Gerut for topping off our perfect summer evening with the crack of your bat and your long quick stride around the basepaths on your way to home plate.

One person is very glad that his sister is moving....He has already staked out his space. Seth has plans to repaint and move into Layne's room the minute she vacates the premises.

Well life is changing in the Petri household. Our daughter, Layne, is moving to San Luis Obispo next weekend and we will miss her greatly. She is excited to start her new college life on her own and we are excited with her, but sad to let her go. She's moving in with some really good girls, so we're sure she will have good days ahead.
